HKIEd Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Cheng Yin Cheong was video interviewed by television channel Euronews recently, and took the opportunity to talk about his new paradigm for learning and teaching.
Central to Professor Cheng’s perspective was the observation that when teachers use traditional education methods, the young generation merely develops the abilities, knowledge and skills of their predecessors. There is nothing to set them apart from previous generations. He said that teachers should incorporate globalisation, localisation and individualisation into students’ learning process and in their own teaching process. It is important to help students develop contextualised multiple intelligence and creativity because all students are different and should be taught as individuals.
The video of the interview was broadcast recently at the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) in Rio de Janerio, the latest iteration of an important international event staged yearly by the Qatar Foundation for Education. The video inspired attendees and generated a number of international responses, including an invitation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for Professor Cheng to participate in the BLOSSOMS programme (http://blossoms.mit.edu). This follows numerous invitations to present keynote speeches at international conferences in recent years.
