Very soon after its establishment, the Institute recognized
citizenship education as an area of both strategic importance
and high potential for research and development. At the Institute, “citizenship
education” follows an inter-disciplinary approach to
strengthen research culture and capacity among staff with interest
in six broad themes:
- National Education, including areas such as the
teaching and learning of Chinese literature, history, culture,
arts,
society, politics, and economics
- Social education in Hong Kong, including areas such as
the teaching and learning of Hong Kong literature, history,
culture, arts, society, politics, and economics
- Multiculturalism, international and cross-cultural awareness,
and global citizenship
- Democratic development, the rule of law, and human rights,
as well as areas related to the civic mission and democratic
governance of schools, civic engagement, civic identity,
and civil society
- Environmental Education
- Critical Thinking
The role of the Key Research Area (KRA) in Citizenship Education
will be to support research across these six themes, and to
contribute to the creation of a diverse and prolific research
culture at the Institute of Education.
