Collaborative Projects

The Institute, in collaboration with its partner universities and educational institutions, has been undertaking collaborative projects in the local, regional and international contexts. The collaborative projects include:

International Conferences/ Seminars/ Scholarly Activities

Between 1999 and 2003, the Institute had organised, sponsored and co-sponsored 33 international conferences with various international and regional organisations and partners. These conferences have created numerous opportunities for exchange and collaboration in the development of scholarly work and community service.

Joint International Education Programmes

The Institute is committed to serving international communities in some key areas of education. It has designed and delivered R&D courses for high-level government officials and senior school managers in the Region. For example, the Institute, in collaboration with the Asia Development Bank Institute (ADBI), organised a series of high-level seminars/workshops on partnership in IT and education for key government officials and leaders in the Region in 2000. CIRD (Formerly CRIC), the Department of English and the Department of Information and Applied Technology, in collaboration with the United Chinese School Teachers' Association of Malaysia, organised The Training Programme for Malaysia Primary School (UCSTAM) Teachers for the primary school principals of Malaysia in 2001. CIRD and APCELSQ, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of Cambodia and with support from the Education Department of HKSAR, organised two Training Programmes for Cambodian Secondary Provincial Inspectors in 2000 and 2001.

Joint publications with international and local partners

The Institute and the Kluwer Academic Publishers (The Netherlands) co-published 3 books in teacher education, namely, New Teacher Education for the Future: International Perspectives, Teaching Effectiveness and Teacher Development: Towards A New Knowledge Base, and Subject Teaching and Teacher Education in the New Century: Research and Innovation in 2001 and 2002. A very successful partnership with the Education Department of HKSAR, the Hong Kong Subsidised Primary Schools Council, the Hong Kong Subsidised Secondary Schools Council and the Asia-Pacific Educational Research Association resulted in the publication of The Hong Kong and International Educational Policies: A Handbook (Volumes 1 & 2 with CD ROM) which contributes to the ongoing policy debate and formulation.

Joint international R&D projects

The Institute undertakes international R&D projects that are of strong relevance to local education. The Schools Around the World (SAW) project is one of the major projects. SAW is a multinational, systemic teacher professional development project that aims to improve student achievement. Hong Kong is one of the nine participating nations/regions which include Australia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Japan, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States.
